My daughter is 52

Question
My daughter is 14 and in the 8th grade. she has played soccer since she was young and volleyball all 3 years of middle school. I want to put her in club and asked her where her passion is and what sport is she wanting to play club. Within a split second she said volleyball. As a mother, I want her to follow her heart as I believe that is whats going to drive her to succeed.

My problem is, she is 14 and 5'2 ( I am also 5'2 lol), I do not think she is getting any taller. I see her play and know that she has a good serve #strong arm# that she can excel in and she is good at digs. My question is, will someone with her height and her heart/drive have a chance at succeeding in this sport? Is a volleyball scholarship even possible? She also talked about beach volleyball #We are Samoan and love the beach), is that even harder as it is only a 2 player game and she is only 5'2? Just want to know the challenges and the reality of a 5'2 girl who wants to play volleyball with the "big girls".

Answer
Hello Margaret
My name is Coach Tovar

I will help you by answering your questions in parts.

1. My question is, will someone with her height and her heart/drive have a chance at succeeding in this sport?

Her heart and drive will always help her find a way for her to succeed in anything it's just that some people might have just a little more heart, more drive,  plus they might be 5'6 and taller. If she loves to play volleyball now then she will love it forever whether she is on a team or not.

2. Is a volleyball scholarship even possible?

If she stays at that height then yes it would be very difficult for her to be accepted to even the lowest qualifying scholarship. Place her in a club team for the love of the game and not for any other reason.

3. She also talked about beach volleyball #We are Samoan and love the beach), is that even harder as it is only a 2 player game and she is only 5'2?

You do have to be more fit in beach volleyball but if they love the game then work and practice will become play and love of the game.

4. Just want to know the challenges and the reality of a 5'2 girl who wants to play volleyball with the "big girls".

In high school she will be fine as a LIBERO and possibly a setter but unfortunately that might be as afar as she goes.

I hope this answers your question.
