Am i too short to be a college OH?

Question
Im 5'6", a sophomore and the OH for my high school varsity team. I've played
varsity since i was a freshman and have always had a dream of proceeding on
to be a hitter for a college team.. I've played a year of club as well and plan to
play more but i'm afraid i have a very small chance at becoming a hitter for a
college team... am i too short to be a hitter or is it a possibility for me?
Volleyball is my life and i absolutely love it so i would take any position on a
college team that i could get but my strongest point is hitting... and it's my
absolute favorite position there's no better feeling on the court than getting
an amazing kill. I want to play college ball so badly but my lack of height
worries me... is becoming a college OH a possibility for me?

Answer
Good afternoon and welcome to www.allexperts.com!

Your future as a college OH has nearly limitless possibilities.  Let's examine some!

a) Grades & Classes.   Do you have the grades?  If so, have you taken college prep or even advanced classes?  You see, I teach 10th graders who are still in Algebra I.  They talk about playing college basketball, wrestling, etc. But they should be less concerned how much they can bench, and more concerned about whether they have the chance of even being accepted to anything more than a community college.

b) Coachability & Athleticism.  My stepd. was 1st all-state here in Virginia.  At 5'6", a bombing hit, beastly vertical, and incredible personality, she could have played at nearly any D3 or D2 school.  But she chose to go to a D1 school that she loved, and she HOPED the vball coach would want her to play.  The coach did.  She'll be a senior next fall, and she wouldn't change a thing!  If you have similar athleticism and personality, you can do the same thing.

c) Front Row.    At 5'6", you can definitely play front row on a JV team, and maybe even on most varsity teams.  But for most club teams, after you get up to u16's, u17's, etc., if you're not tall, then it creates problems for your team as the opponent's spikers can hit over you, and bounce the ball in front of your diggers.  Back to my stepdaughter......she played OH her first year in college, and she hit pretty well.  But the other teams would back set or slide 60% of the time, and the 6' girls (who were similarly athletic) would hit over her.  It was hurtful to watch.  Most D1 teams have no chance at a winning season until they can find athletes who were at least 5'10".

So I think I answered most of your questions.
Now, you answer some!  haha
a) Are you playing club?  Where?  What is the biggest tournament that you will be attending?
b) What camps will you be attending?  If you're a soph or a junior, you should consider attending camps that are at the schools that you're considering attending after you graduate from high school.  Maybe one of my STAR camps is near you!  If so, come and join us!
c) Optional.  You could send me a copy of a match that you guys played in this past fall.  I'd enjoy seeing it.  And I'll tell you what I think about your game.

Thank you again for visiting www.allexperts.com.  Now, how about visiting me at www.coachhouser.com.  I think you'll like the smiling faces.
