jump serve with sidespin

Question

This is me
Hello mr. Houser,

My name is Jonathan, and I've been playing volleyball for 6 years now. I'm quite dedicated to this sport, and always love adding new tricks up my sleeve to improve my game.

I am from Aruba. no offence but you probably dont know where  Aruba is. That being said, volleyball isnt that big of a sport here on the island. Our volleyball only has like 5-6 good players. Only 1 of which can do a decent jump serve(me)
I dont mean to brag, but our lvl of volleyball isnt as high as other countries, but over here my level is high enough.

Like I already said Im the only Aruban that has a decent jump serve. I love my jump serve, I hit it with decent speed and it has good top spin on it. But I've noticed that my competition has been adapting to my serve. Which made me want to spice up my jump serve to the next level.

At this years olimpics they've showed a replay jump serve from brasil. the angle was from behind the server. I noticed that the topspin on it had a huge sidespin effect on it. I could guess atleast 3feet. I immediately fell in love with that serve. I've looked online, on how to do this serve, but there's nothing on it on youtube, (there is but no tutorial) and the english on the written tutorial is a little high for my english. (we dont speak english that well on Aruba)

My question to you: "Could you please teach me this jump serve with sidespin"?

My topspin is getting easier everytime I use it against my competition. I would like to make my competition get frustrated again like they did when I started with my top spin jumpserve.

PLEASE HELP ME OUT!?

Sincerely,

Jonathan R Petrona

Answer
Good morning!

Thank you for visiting www.allexperts.com!

I haven't been watching the Olympics as much as I wish I could b/c I'm a referee and I also give private volleyball lessons.

In order for the ball to curve, it must have side-spin, right?  With means, instead of coming over top of the ball, your hand will have to hit the ball something close to a 45 degree angle?  If you've ever hit a side-spinner accidentally, that's what you've done.......your hand has either accidentally hit the ball on the side (which I don't' think you can intentionally duplicate!) or your hand has hit the ball at a 30 or 45 degree tilt.

I'm sorry that I haven't seen the Brazilian jumper.  In fact, I've never been able to teach a person to hit a side-spinner, b/c what I just typed is all I really know.  I've always wanted to learn, but have never come upon anyone who can show me.

If you will send me the tutorial site, I will try to convert it into words that everyone can understand.  (Both your English & your grammar are awesome!!)

Also, practice hitting the ball at an angle.  I'm sure that's the proper method..........I've just never tried it much, I've never seen any demonstrate it, and I've never taught it. But I think I'll try it the next time I'm in the gym!  haha

I hope this helps.  If you have more questions, please ask me!  And if you have a moment, please visit me at www.coachhouser.com.  I think you'll like all the smiling faces!
