volleyball timing and attack

Question
hi matt
this is reinard flores and i've been playing volleyball for 3 years..i was sidelined from varsity  volleyball for a whole year but now im back and fully recovered..my problem is getting all my mechanics working again..i still use my three step approach with my right foot first..but my problem seems to be my timing, and swing..im starting to swing at a low point which is aggrivating my shoulder..how can i fix my timing, and swing and use this confidence in a game?

Answer
Reinard-
I answered your first question without seeing this one first.  You're basically asking the same question, but you have thrown in some points that you left out on the first one, so I'll talk to those.  You mentioned a lower point of attack regarding your swing.  I see a lot of younger players doing this becuse they feel they can generate more power in doing so.  They feel they can use more of their larger muscle groups and typically they wind up slamming the ball....into the block.  I spoke on this in a previous response I wrote to someone else, but I'll talk to it again for you.  Reaching high is something that you really need to focus on, being that you can jump the way you do along with your height.  It will feel awkward at first, again, because you'll feel as though you're actually losing power.  And you may be at first, but through repetition, you'll become more profecient with it.  Some of the best hitters in the world can actually attack from nearly the top of the antenna, which is where you need to be reaching when you swing.  You may not be able to hit from 11 feet, but there's nothing that says you can't reach for it.  Let me know how it goes, and I look forward to any other questions you may have.  Take care!

Matt
