defensive mentality of a D/S

Question
I am the father of a Junior in high school she's only 4'11" but she's a great defensive asset to her team and her serve allows her to play d/s on the back row; however, she's been struggling mentally with trying to figure out if her jump serve is what she wants to use versus her regular serve.  I've told her the coach doesn't want a net serve so which ever works for her is the one she should use but what is the best course of action for her.

Answer
Chris,

I could better answer this question if I would have seen her serve.  So my advice will be sight unseen.  We (at Fordham University) would be more inclined to recruit a libero who has a great jump serve than a regular serve.  A serve is meant to score points, take the other team out of their offense or to take a player out of the offense.  If your daughters down serve is very good and she is doing those three things and she is not doing them as she jump serves then she should stay down.  If she is scoring more points with the jump serve she should continue to jump.

A jump serve is only good if it is better than your standing serve.

I hope this was helpful.
Good luck,
Steve
