Fly Rod Weights for Salmon Fishing: Choosing the Right Power
Question
What does the numbers 5/6,6/7,7/8 stand for? Would like to know the best fly rod to use for salmon fishing.
Answer
They stand for the weight of the line the rod can handle. Salmon fishing needs a high number. An 8 or a 9 weight rod is needed. Smaller rods are too weak, and the line will not make it in the river currents. All salmon except those in the ocean or landlocked, are caught on spawning runs. This means river current. Lighter rods might work on LUCK, but the 8 or 9 rod is needed.
