Value of Hardy Brothers Bamboo Rod

Question
I have a Hardy Brothers Palakona 14' LRH Salmon flyrod. Rod has no serial numbers. Registered trademark written on bamboo by cork A/A. The rod also has IH' close to butt. It also has number 10 on it, which I think is line size. Bamboo diameter above cork is 5/8". Wt is 25 oz. Four sections are 58" each. Rod has 2 tips. Reel seat is approximately 2/3 of the way below where cork meets bamboo. Reel seat is made of nickel silver or tin. Cork to but is 27". The guides are wrapped in green except stripper guide which is green and copper colored. Furells have protective inserts in 2 sections. Bamboo is flat sized hexagon shaped. Case is green colored cloth with rod description on tag. Rod has never been used. It might have been purchased at Manda's in Akron, OH.

Answer
Richard,

L. R. Hardy was a great caster and a nephew or grandson of one the founding Hardys.

If 10 is the line size then it is a modern rod made since the 70s.

as per  the Canadian Hardy and Grays  web site
http://www.hardyandgreyscanada.com/hardy/roddating.php
As general information, rods manufactured prior to 1966 should carry individual identification numbers (i.d.) stamped on the reel fitting, or butt cap. Rods manufactured post 1966 will usually carry a simple letter coding inscribed in ink above the cork handle (month/year). As a special note, cane rods manufactured between 1966-1981 may carry either, or both, of these identification numbers.

According to Antique %26 Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification %26 Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000, add about 30% for age of book.):the LRH two handed salmon rod 10' ,three piece has no extra tip is  valued at  $50, 125 and $225 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. Your rod is 14'  , still this is a good indication. I think I could get more, like $500 if in excellent condition.

All these assumptions may not apply to a Salmon rod. Most history is kept on bamboo trout fly rods. Spey , 2 handed casting is an up and coming fad. IF you want to sell your rod e-mail me, [email protected].

Take a look at that web page for history.

I quote these books written by researchers so you know I am not making it all up, But I include my experience as well.

It has taken me the best part of an hour to write this up , please take a few seconds to provide feedback. Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.

Luck,
Mac
