Identifying and Maintaining Your Horrocks-Ibbotson H-I Rod

Question

H-I rod
I bought a very stout Rod at a yard sale and was hoping you could tell me more about it. It's 7.5 feet long two piece fiberglass pole, with solid oak handles. A black rubber bumper on the bottom. Most of the decal is scratched off, but you can see a white Diamond with a red H-I on it. The fittings seem to be nickle,(blue oxidization)and the eyes are very small. I think it's a sea pole. Any info and maintenance suggestions would help.

Answer
Hi Bill,

You are correct.  It is a saltwater rod, probably 1950s vintage or later.  The ferrules may be nickel-silver (nickel or brass) or possibly even aluminum.  Value would be in the $20-$55 range depending on actual condition of the rod.  It should be a good one to fish with, but not much in the way of collector value.

Thanks,  Joe
