info. on a bamboo rod

Question

ROD004
Good-day,I have a split Bamboo fly rod made by HARDY BROS, ALNWICK The model is the GOLD MEDAL PALAKONA HEAD trade mark.It is 120ins long/in 3 sections, they all have the LOCK FAST JOINTE SYSTEM. I also have one extra tip witch seems to be a little different.I have the original cloth case that says BY APPOINTMENT TO THE LATE KING GEORGE V 1931 / 1936 and the aluminum transport tube. I would like to know what it might be worth. As you can see by the picture, this rod was hardly ever used. Thank-you for your help.  Ken Harris

Answer
Hi Ken,

The Gold Medal fly rod in very good condition would probably be valued in the $175-250.00 range.  An assessment of actual condition and any negotiation you might do with a potential buyer would determine the actual value.

This one certainly looks like a nice rod and you do have the bag and tube with it.  The extra tip appears to have a reinforcement wrap but otherwise looks as if it belongs.  Kind of hard to tell from a picture but the rod looks like it is in very good shape.

A reinforcement wrap would most likely have been used to cover a small ding from a weighted fly or a hook gouge.  It is not uncommon to see and is a normal part of owning and using a bamboo rod.

Thanks,  Joe
