Fly line weight

Question
Hello, a couple questions on cane rods.
I have a Heddon #17 bamboo. It has black wrapping with a red or orange trim. The Heddon is printed at an angle around the rod base. There are no other markings on the rod, letters or numbers. It's 9' three piece with two tips in a cream colored, red thread trimmed cloth bag and an aluminum tube with "Heddon" written on the endcap. It has a brown marble like reel seat area with metal screw down fasteners. It was my grandfathers and came with a Pflueger medalist reel, maybe not original to the rod as it looks a little worn while the rod appears to have little if any use and is bright and shinny with perfect wrapping on the ferules. I would like any info on what weight line this particular rod would use and if possible a manufacture date (*pre 1939?) or any info available.

I also have a Farlows Scotland cane rod 8' two piece that reads 4 1/16 oz  Norm Thompson Ultimate. Would a 5 weight line be appropriate for this rod?

Answer
Bill,
Our forefathers fished much like we do today . Like today most rods in the past were 6 weight , that's usually a good guess.

You can verify the date at:

I say 30s , ending the label you described in 1939.
Sorry, I know almost nothing about non USA rods but if you can find this book :
Fishing Tackle: A Collector's Guide  Hardcover, 1991 Graham Turner
It might help.
Luck,
Mac
