H-I rod

Question
I have an H-I rod that reads Royal Magnaflex. Can you give me info on this rod?

Answer
Hi Matt,

I don't have much information on this one.  It is a fiberglass rod that appears to be set up to allow spin or fly fishing by changing the reel you use.  The blank should be a 7'0" creamy colored brown with black wraps tipped in copper.  It will handle about a 5wt fly line.  Probably made in the 1950s or 1960s.  I don't have a value for it, but suspect the combo rods were a bit more rare so it could be in the $15-$30 range depending on who you might find as a potential buyer and what you might negotiate.

There were a few companies that made this type of rod usually in the 7'0" to 7'6" length.  I assume they were thought to be used as travel rods so you could carry only one rod but two reels and be ready for spin or fly fishing as the day required.  They are likely better suited for spin fishing than for fly fishing simply because of the blank design and guide setup.

Thanks,  Joe
