corkskrews

Question
I havn't been fishing for that long, and i am always hearing stuff about corkskrews that you put on your hook. I don't really understand how they work and i was wondering if you could explain them to me.

Answer
Hi Kurtis

The corkscrews look just like they sound.  It's a little piece of corkscrewed wire that is attached to the eye of a hook that is generally used for soft plastics.  Some hooks come with them attached already (google "Corkscrew hooks").  They can be added to hooks too.  These are sold as "Hitchhikers" (see site below).

The corkscrews allow you to screw into the nose of a plastic worm, tube, super fluke or other plastic lure.  It's just an easier way to rig a bait like this weedless or "Texas Style".  The screw goes in the nose, and the point gets buried in the body of the bait.

I even pour them into some jigs for this same purpose.

I have also used these Hitchhikers to add a twister tail to the rear of a lure like a Johnson Silver Minnow.

Good fishing,

Marc
