Phillipson smuggler fly rod

Question
I have a phillipson smuggler rod that is in excellent shape however it is missing the tip section. Can a new tip
Be found or built. And do you think it would be worth the expense. Thanks.

Answer
Robert,
I assume you have a bamboo fly rod.
I have spare parts but it will only be similar to the original and you can't all the rod with a replaced part an authentic Philipson if you use something like that.  About $50
I can build you want that matches similar specifications for $125. It will take me 10-15 hours to do it.
You might try Ricksrods in Denver, but make sure you have the taper ( diameter measurements every 5 inches ) . Don't take his word that it is either Philipson or Smuggler - make him prove it. I would guess about $50.

It cold be more if you don't have the metal connector for the tip.

Is it worth it ?:
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.

Homel gives the Phillipson  model "Smuggler" pack fly rod 7'8"  with an extra tip, 4 sections the  value of  $100, 345 and $595 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

Right now it has no resale value even if the 3 sections you have are mint. And yes you should have 5 pieces - 2 tips.

With replacement most honest sellers would let it go for around 200.

If  I built a new tip and restored it , I would probably get $600.
I hope that helps
Luck,
Mac
