Troubleshooting Spinning Reel Line Tangling: A Simple Guide

I bought a Shakespeare Mantis spinning combo.  I was wondering what is the best way to get the line ready?  It keeps tangling.  Soak it?

Although line will relax a bit after you get it wet, you shouldn't have to soak it.  

For a spinning reel, make sure that you put the spool of line flat on the table and not with a pencil through the middle.  It should be coming off the spool in nice easy loops.  If not, turn the spool over.

Some lines have more memory than others.  Lines like Trilene XT and Big Game can be a little tough on a small spinning reel.  Pick a softer line and don't exceed the weight on the spool of the reel.  Heavy line spooled on a reel that is meant for lighter line will be trouble.  

Lures that spin like a mepps can cause line twist.  Use a swivel ahead of the lure in this case.
