QuestionI am looking to buy my boyfriend a rod/reel for his birthday and neither of us know much about fishing. We have a boat and I fish for trout with an old rod I got from my pops when I was a teenager. I am looking for a starting point and some reccomendations since the guy at the local shop made me feel somewhat overwhelmed. He is 5'8" and pretty husky if that matters at all.
AnswerWell it sort of depends on what size the average trout is that you are going for. Personally I like a Medium Light Rod 7 foot long with a good medium light spinning reel. It can double for bluegill and for some bass applications as well.
String it with 4 or 6 pound test line depending on the lures and water clarity you can go to 8 pound test. Dont use Fluorocarbon, it comes off a spinning reel to fast. Use a good monofiliament.

The Daiwa Reel and the Shimano Rod in Medium will work for medium casting spinners and live bait for trout. You can go with a model 1500 and the Ultralight if you are fishing for trout under 12 to 14 inches because you will use smaller lures.
