wrestling a tall wrestler

Question
I am 145# 5 foot 7 inch high school wrestler.  I am wrestling a 6 foot 3 inch 145# wrestler.  Any advice on countering this height disadvantage, legs, and reach.  I am strong and quick, very aggressive.

Answer

Upper-Body Threat
Hey Doug,

Thank you for the question. You and I are practically the same height, so this problem is a simple one that can be fixed. From the neutral position, I would attack high-singles being careful to not get stretched out underneath, as an undershot usually renders you in a bad position. Ankle-picks or snap-downs would also be advisable to get your opponent bending down severely at the waist. From the bottom position, I would be aware of long wrestlers ability to be good leg riders and cradlers. Keep your knees together and your elbows to your hip pointers, constantly applying back pressure, until you can stand up and shear away or Peterson/Granby roll. From the top, I would grab ankles at the shoe laces, keeping his heel to his butt for a break down, then I would look for near-side cradles, inside-wrist/half for a pinning combination, or at the least, cut him loose and take you chances going neutral, in the event that he is a clever mat wrestler.  Be sure to use good fakes, use misdirection, and attack at angles only. Above all, do not rely on muscle alone, but leverage and conditioning. Check out my sites for superior energy and nutrition.
