gear ratio for bait casters

Question
I was at a local sporting goods store and had a conversation with another customer about what gear ratio I should get when I buy my first bait casting reel. He said a 5:1 was ok but is not the best for different situations. He suggested that if I have the funds that I should buy a fast reel(6.0:1 or higher) and a slower reel such as a 3.8:1 for when I fish for large fish or use swimbaits. What is your addvice?

Answer
Gary,
I have several different rod and reel outfits for different situations.  The fellow customer pretty much said it right.  If you can't afford more than one outfit, go with the 5:1 range; otherwise, it is best to have different outfits matched with different types of lures - especially if you're in to tournament fishing.

Hope this helps.  If not, please feel free to ask again.

Good Fishing,
Chris "Evin" Carter
