Answer
Hello David:
I have fished deep a few times for lake trout, but I am no expert in that area.  But I'll tell you what I know.
First of all, you can buy safe non-lead line if you want.  Or use monel.  How deep you want to go depends on how much line you have out, how fast you are trolling, and the weight of the line.  For the fish and the depth you have where you live, local knowledge from experienced fishermen would be a good idea.  To store the line a salt water reel is probably your best choice, something like a Penn but not their top model; you only need a brake and a large enough spool to store the line you are using.  So the size of the reel depends on the weight of the line and how many yards you'll be using.  For example, a reel that would handle 250 yds of 15# mono would be okay for 100 yds 12# lead core--as you can see, it's bulky stuff.  The rod should be about 6-7 feet long and have enough whip in it so as not to rip the bait out of the fish's mouth.  A 20 foot  mono leader tapered from a couple of pounds less than the line you are using down to 4# attached to the lead core line with a nail knot will work.  Lures should depend on what is used locally, but in general use spoons, needle fish type plugs, and large Rapala plugs; wobbling plugs are excellent--just find the right speed to make them work correctly while trolling.  Keep a loose drag or none at all--just the clicker on.  And with lead line which has no stretch, horsing them in would pull the hook--do it slowly and carefully.  Good luck!  Boris
