great grandfathers rod

Question
my grandfather recently gave me his dads old rod. it is made by true temper its a Montague 6210 5'10" casting rod.it seems to be some type of wood and only has three eyes. I'm asuming its some type of salmon rod do to the length of the handle. i was wondering if you could provide me with any information you might have or find on this rod.it would be much apreciated

Answer
Hi Justin,

Sounds like an old boat rod...maybe from the 1930s or so...if the rod shaft appears to be wood, it may be split bamboo if it is six sided...if not, it may be hickory wood.  The handle should be longer and made of wood...probably turned on a lathe...maybe with a rubber button at the butt end.

Boat rods are typically used for bottom fishing in saltwater or for larger freshwater fish.  If this sounds like your rod, the value would depend on its actual condition but would probably be in the $30-$100 range.

Thanks,  Joe
