HMG GFF806 2 3/4oz Fly rod Never Fished

Question
Joe,

Back in the 70's I bought my father a GFF806 Fenwick fly rod. I am not sure what I paid for it. It is an 8 foot 2 3/4oz rod and it has never been fished with. It is in new condition in the original rod sack and tube. I am trying to place a value on it for my home inventory for insurance purposes and don't know where to begin. My intention is to fish it or to have my son fish it as I still think this is a fine rod. Do you have any idea of what the current value of the rod might be? Would you see anything wrong with fishing it or do you think it should be held in new condition and never fished for collecting purposes?

I appreciate your advice and your time.

Answer
Hi Robert,

I would say that if it is a GFF806 with green silk wraps and chartruese tipping, it could be valued as high as $225-$250.  If it is a GFF806 with any other color wraps, it is likely alued more like $80-$100 or so.

This is all based on a guess after doing a little searching. I don't have any real data on this rod in my reference materials.  For insurance purposes, it should be adequate.

Thanks,  Joe
