correct line

Question
I'm confident you will know the answer. I have been told that i am cause damage to both my bait casters and actually had to have one replaced. The reason I was given is using braided line alone and I should first spool on some mono and then splice in braided. Is this correct and if so why.  The reel I damaged was a bass pro  RGX10HE.

Answer
Hi Mark,

The only reason that I know of putting mono on is that otherwise the braid will slip around the spool at some point.  It is so slick that it won't grab the base of the spool and tighten up.

It sounds like you mean that it wrecked the spool or something like that.  That I must say that I never heard of.  What did it do to the reel?  Was the spool aluminum or plastic.  I could see it crushing a spool if you were fighting a really big fish.  We used to have that happen years ago when reel manufactures started making "graphite" spools.  We would fight a big salmon and the pressure of reeling in 150 yards of line very tight would crack the spools.

Did you bend the shaft by having the drag too tight?  I repair rods and I have never seen so much damage since braids.  They are great and don't stretch, but something has to give.  It seems to be rods!

Give me a little more info and maybe I can see what they mean about the braid wrecking the reel.

Thanks,

Marc
