stringing a fly reel

Question
Gary... i've got fly backing, floating leader line, and tippet. how do i tie it all together onto my reel? i need to know lengths of line and knots and everything.

Answer
Rory,
Starting with the backing, find out from the manufacturer of your reel how many yards will fit on the reel (it will be dependent upon what lb test your backing is). The backing information is usually stated in the reel's manual.

The fly line itself comes in standard lengths so there's no choice there.

Leader and tippet length will depend on the size of leader you get and the type of fishing you'll do. Most leaders (tippet included) will be about 8' to 10' with a tippet length of 18" to 24". To clarify, tippet is the end of the leader where the fly is attached so it is a part of the whole leader.

I have included a link to a website where you can review each type of knot that will get your components connected and get you on the water. Just cut and paste this link to your browser...

I hope this helps,
