Restoring Vintage Fishing Rods: A User's Success Story & Expert Advice
Question
Mr. Sinclair
Keep my copy of your invaluable Restoration/Specs handbook on my workbench, at all times. Didn't know 'til now, your advise was available, on line. I'm very pleased. Some 40 years ago, I aquired a Heddon 9ft. #125 Expert 3F GBG or C with tagged bag and original anodized tube, both caps and sticker included.
Nothing harmed, but it had been poorly re-varnished and over the enusing years, never set-up. I stripped it, replacing only the finish, nothing else. Since I had intended to use it and for ease of care, 4 coats of Tung oil were applied. Do you feel that an oil finish will be acceptable, if I wish To sell this rod ? A pleasure talking to a true legend.
Sincerely, Matt

Answer
Hi Matt,
Thanks for your kind words about the book - I really appreciate it.
Your rod is a nice one - and I think that tung oil is a very good finish for a bamboo rod. Now, it's not strictly "right" for a Heddon, but as long as it was done well, I don't think anyone is going to complain. Heddon's varnish was notorious for melt-down over the years. That might have been the original owner's problem - he tried to overcoat sticky varnish and it just made a mess. I've seen that often.
If you need advice or have questions about bamboo rods, I'm always happy to help. You can reach me at Paducahmichael@aol.com.
Take care and enjoy your Heddon rod!
best,
Michael Sinclair
