Fly Fishing for Bluegill in Texas Hill Country: Line & Fly Selection

Question
I go fishing in the Texas hill country. I decided to fly fish for bluegill. But I have no idea what line or what type of fly to use. I fish in little streams and rivers. Could you help me out here?

Answer
Mark,
The size of your fly line will be dictated by the size/weight of fly rod you have. A 4wt to 5wt rod will suffice for species from Bluegill to Bass and Trout and it will give you flexibility to fish other species as well. I would stick with a floating line most often when fishing streams and rivers. I would recommend a spare spool with sinking line when fishing deeper rivers or small lakes.

As far as fly choice, I would suggest a variety of flies from poppers to dry flies and nymphs. Basically, take note of the bugs where you are fishing and try to match with a similar fly pattern. Hoppers and ant imitations are probably the most popular when fishing for Bluegill.

Hope this helps,
Gary
