Surf fishing tackle

Question
I am from New England and I am used to using a pretty heavy rod for striper fishing. I am now in Southern California and have a Penn 700 series reel and a 6' ugly stick medium-heavy with 25lb. test line. I am having some problems casting, if I drop the line down to 20 or 15 lb. test line will it help?

Answer
Hi Jared, it would help your casting if you dropped your line's pound rating, another way for you to get your distance up is by buying a longer rod.

If you don't mind spending a few bucks to somewhat upgrade your equipment with out sacrificing your line test, you can get a longer rod (say around 9-13 feet) and spool up with braid. 20lbs test braid would have the diameter of 6lbs test line.

With this upgrade in your system, you would be able to literally blast your lures and baits out to where the fish are!
