reef fishing

Question
Hello,
Me and my buddy are going to Florida Keys in January. We both live in Wisconsin, and are prepared for salmon/steelhead fishing on a regular basis. We will be fishing with a guide down there for about 2 days, but we are also planning to rent a boat and maybe do some bridge, or reef fishing on our own.
Would you recommend taking our regular salmon gear down to Keys? Or are the saltwater fish too much for our rods/reels?
Our regular set up includes: Shimano Clarus rod - up to 1oz, braided line up to 30lbs, 9ft, reel: shimano stradic FI4000. Other rig: Cabelas Pro Guide rod 9ft, 1.5oz, line 30lbs, reel stradic FI4000, or daiwa caldia.
Would that gear be sufficient for saltwater? What kind of fish could we target with this? Would spinning for tuna be too much?

Thank you,
Erick

Answer
Hi Erick,

your gear can take most fish in Florida, although we might be thinking of two different things. I mean if you are going flats fishing, yes, you can use your gear. bridge fishing, just as long as you are not going after fish that are long runners, you should be fine...the rod is a bit too long for boat use though, you can use it on the beach and would work well!

I've caught yellowfin tuna on spinning reels before in fact, it's just one size higher than what you have. But again, it depends on how big the tuna you are fishing for are. The fish we were fishing for were 15-20lbs in size.

Hope my answer helps.
