Fishing rods

Question
I have several fishing rods that I am sure are of the fiberglass kind-When I was into fishing 30 - 35 years ago I loved these rods because of how they felt when a fish struck-- I haven't used these rods in 30 years, but I want to get back into fishing -- Are these  rods still usable -- most of them would have to be reconditioned with new guides and new handles ( cork)--I have been to the local stores and I just don't like the feel of the new graphite rods--Most all of the sales people have told me that fiberglass has only so much life to it and that I would be taking a chance to recondition the rods instead of buying new ( But I am wondering if that is sales talk )--Whats
's your take on this subject--These rods still seem to be strong--but then again I haven't hooked a fish with them in at least 30 years

Answer
As a matter of fact researching this I found that Fiberglass rods are much more durable then Graphite rods HOWEVER, the sensitivity of Graphite is far superior then fiberglass. As for the lifespan of the fiberglass and if it has deteriorated in the past 30+ years is really a question that I am not sure I could answer without seeing them or possibly having them inspected. Depending on the size of fish you are fishing for and the amount of bending you believe these rods can handle will be the real trick. Here is a few things to consider.
-- All Rods Break!
-- Fiberglass If Protected from sunshine should maintain its strength. UV rays degrade the resin that holds the fibers together.
-- Give the Rod a Very gentle bend. if you hear any sort of crackling or splintering type noises I would be very suspicious of the rods strength.
-- Look the rod over and see if any places of separation along the shaft has occurred. Separation would run the length of the shaft and look almost like flakes. (a sign of degraded resin)

Hopefully this helps a little but be careful when fishing with the rod if your going to be fishing for a very heavy strong fighting fish this rod may break at the most inopportune time.
