Replacing Aluminum Golf Shafts with Steel: Compatibility & Considerations

Question
I HAVE AN OLD SET OF MACGREGOR BLADES REG.075. THE CLUBS HAVE OLD TOUR FLEX ALUMINUM SHAFTS. THE SHAFTS ARE LARGER IN DIAMETER AT THE CLUB HEAD THAN STEEL. CAN I REPLACE THE ALUMINUM SHAFTS WITH STEEL? I ASK BECAUSE I'M TOLD THEY CAN NOT BE REPLACED WITH STEEL.  THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP.

Answer
Steve,

It is quite possible the irons you describe have a flared tip. The flared tip is made to fit over an extention from the hosel giving the appearance of a mated joint. where the shaft and club head meet.

Today, the only flared tip shafts are for putters.

If the shaft is not a flare tip and just larger in diameter than a typical steel shaft you can shim the steel shaft to fit.

Thanks
Jim
