Ben Hogan

Question
Hi in Ben Hogans 5 lessons he says when the hands are at hip height on the downswing, "the arms and hands should feel absolutely loaded with power" My question is do other pros feel this and i felt it once and i hit the ball beautifully. Thanks

Answer
Hi Ryan:

I believe the answer is yes Ryan, however, it is something that just happens.  It happens as a result of the unwinding chain reaction to start the forward swing.  Centrifugal force straightens the left arm on the downswing as your body is unwinding.  That is what you feel as "loaded".  However, you cannot try to keep your arm straight or try to feel loaded.  It just happens.  In reality, it is a very soft feeling in the arms, one that has no tension.  Proper sequencing with no tension leads to speed and delivery.  The hands are used to "release" or deliver the clubface to the back of the ball during the swing forward to the target.  The amount the hands rotate should be minimal, but they should rotate enough to square the face and deliver the "hit" to the ball.  Good question.
