Loft/Lie Adjustments Before or After Lessons

Question
Hi Michael,

I'm a relative beginner when it comes to golf, and I got a new set of clubs about a month ago.  The clubs were extended 3/4", but no lie/loft adjustments were made.  I am planning to take lessons soon, and don't know whether I should have any loft/lie adjustments made before I begin the lessons, or after the lessons when I'll have a better swing. Can you provide any advice on this?

Thanks, Nick

Answer
Nick,

Great question. Take a lesson or two first because you will primarily working on grip, stance and posture. Some swing mechanics will be involved in the second lesson. Ask the Pro at the end of the first lesson if you could hit off a "lie board". At least then you'll have some idea if at that point the clubs may need to be adjusted. When the PGA Professional tapes up the sole of your club, be aware where the mark is on the tape after you take a couple of swings. If the mark is on the toe then the clubs are too flat and conversely if the mark is toward the heel, the clubs are too upright. Since your clubs are 3/4" longer that is effectively 1 and 1/2 degrees upright. (+1/2" = +1 degree)

After the second lesson, with a minimum of three practice sessions in between lessons, have the Pro adjust the lies and loft to fit you. After 6 months have the lies checked again.

Best of luck to you taking up this great game.

Thank you,

Michael Hoffman
