Iron Distance

Question
Hi Dathaeus. I'm 5ft 4 I need help on hitting my irons further. At the moment i seem to be hitting the ball really high up in the air and getting no role on it. I also tend to take big chunks of the grass out of the ground just before i hit the ball.

My 9 iron distance is about 90 yards (if thats any use to you)

Please help!!!

Sam

Answer
Hello and thank you for asking.  You have one major flaw and that is you are hitting the ball on the upswing.  That causes grounding the club before the ball, high ball flight, loss of distance, less/no backspin, and never a crisp shot.  There are many things you can do to correct and I will list a few tips here:

- Make a good initial shoulder turn so you can get some wrist cock in the backswing, which will promote better lag on the downswing.

- Keep the right arm soft on the downswing to maintain lag (righty golfer)

- Hit the ball first and then the ground afterwards with a descending blow; practice with pitch shots before full shots on this.

- Try to hit the ball low... imagine a string stretched out about a yard high about a yard in front of your ball, and try to hit every ball BELOW the string.

- Put the ball back in your stance, especially for all irons 8 and shorter.  6 & 7 can be near the middle of your stance.
