correcting over the top swing

Question
I have an over the top swing which i believe is due to previous back swing issues. I am pretty sure i have the backswing in the correct place now but my body still wants to swing over the top.

I am practicing heavily trying to get the club to come from the inside, swinging with my right elbow coming back into the ribs etc.

I have been practicing for about a week now and I have got to the point where i am having to feel two things happening in my downswing. Firstly i have to feel that my right arm is swinging back behind my body (this allows me to put the club back on plane) and then i swing through the ball to the right.

I have noticed my divots have started to straighten out and even go right and the ball flight is mainly pushed out to the right.

I am not so wooried about ball flight at the moment as I can woirk on that later.

My question is, do my "feelings" seem correct and what other advice do you have for me in this regard. I am a feel player, i prefer to understand what my body should feel as opposed to what it should be doing.

Thanks for any help.

Jason.

Answer
hello jason.  thats really a good question. i like that you are a feel player.  and i think i can relate to what you are going through.  and i know that feel of putting your right arm behind your body in order to create a shallow plane.  you got the right idea but you have the wrong concept.  i too, went through the same process in which i really wanted to shallow out my swing so i was pushing my right arms behind the body.  when you do this, the divots may point straight or right but your ball might fade a little.  that means something is definitely wrong.  let me tell you this.  if you have good swing path, you got a straight shot.  to solve your problem, i believe i have got the right solution.  you said your back swing feels fine... but my guess is that its NOT.  what you feel comfortable does not mean you are swinging right.  there is a difference.  SO, i want you to take the club from OUTSIDE.  feel like you are extending your club all the way to the backswing.  in general, make your backswing A LOT more steeper.  from there, i want you to try the technique of touching your ribs with your arms.  you will see that making the PROPER inside swing is a little easier.  try to imagine fred couples.  try to swing like like him.  his backswing is steep but his downswing is shallow.  something that every good player does.  except that he exaggerates this a little more....  so you should FEEL like you are swinging like him but in reality, you probably won't.  right now your problem is, shallow backswing and shallow downswing.  which may creat shallow swing but will create a WEAK fade that drifts a little bit to the right.  so work and fix on that.
