Maximum power for a shorter golfer

Question
Hello Eddie,

I couldn't help but notice, but you mentioned that you were the shortest golfer ever to play in a U.S Open.  I am about 5'4 with my spikes on and weigh about 162 lbs, and have wondered if in fact I am getting the most power that I can given my physical abilities?  I am a 6 handicap or so, seldomly practicing, only when work affords the time.  My average drive is about 255 yards or so, and I am currently using a G2 driver.  Are there any exercises or routines that I could utilize to tone up my stocky frame into a more well rounded golf physique?  Your feeback is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Francisco Madero

Answer
Hello Francisco:

The two biggest things I would suggest are to get a great stretching program and to build up strength in forearms, wrists, hands and fingers.  You hit it pretty good right now.  Stretching will create speed and speed is key to distance.  That is what we both need.  It helped me tremendously.  Roger Fredericks' program is a good one.  Go online and you can find that.  The thing that I did that was most beneficial was to find someone who stretches people, like a flexibility expert, or flexologist (for lack of a better term).  They can create 10-15 degrees more movement where stretching on your own just can't do it.  Golfers get locked up in the hips, the shoulders and their hamstrings are usually extremely tight, so rotational ability is low.  Therefore, they cannot create the speed needed to support the "want" for more distance.  So get yourself on a stretching program, continue to use "grippers" in the car when you are driving (that is what I do), and see if you can locate a flexibility expert who knows how to stretch someone.  They can help keep you flexible and increase your strength.  You should notice some great dividends.  Good luck.
