PGA Tour Golf Tournament Results: Understanding Tie Positions

Question
One person is the obvious winner with 4 under par. Three
players draw for second with 2 under par. The fifth player has
1 under par and the sixth finishes on par. Where does the
player with 1 under par finish - third or fifth?

Answer
Hi Melissa,

The answer is fifth.  A PGA Tour Scoreboard would look like this:

1st - Adams
2nd - Baker, Costigan, Davis
5th - Edwards
6th - Fowler

The reason they do it this way is because of the money that is paid for each place.  The three players tying for second will be receiving a three-way split of the money set aside for second, third and fourth place.  So the next low score gets fifth place money...and so forth.

Hope my explanation is helpful to you.

Sincerely,
