Determining Amateur Golf Status: A Guide for College Coaches
Question
I am a college golf coach and wonder how or where can I find out if my players has amateur status.
Answer
Dear Mr. Goss,
The Rules of Golf as established by the USGA (and R & A Golf Club of St. Andrews) is the body that decides on matters of amateur status. I think I would begin by reviewing the guidelines in the appendix to the Rules defining amateur status. Then I would go over their guidelines with your team or at least with any players that you have a question about(e.g. did any player enter a professional competition or accept prize money in a tournament, or work in the capacity of a professional or make his/her living at the game of golf, etc.). If a matter arises that you're not positive about, you can contact the USGA to pose your question. They have always been willing to answer Rules questions on a case by case basis, and usually over the phone.
Best wishes,
