New skis for an older skier

2016/7/22 11:04:49

Question
Hello....I am 50 years old, 6 feet tall and weigh about 280 pounds. I have had 3 knee surgeries on my right knee, none because of skiing. Two of the operations were ligament (acl) replacements. I have skied in Colorado, Michigan,New York, West Virginia, Indiana and Ohio and prefer fast groomed slopes with no moguls. I haven't skied in 10 years and am thinking about new skis and bindings. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hey Steve,

Skis have changed a lot in ten years. I would recommend that you look for 'all-mountain' skis for the conditions and type of skiing you describe. All mountain skis are more forgiving and handle a variety of conditions. With the new shapes in skis, making turns is easier than ever. The skis do most of the work. Don't be talked into lesser skis, slalom skis, or giant slalom skis. For your size, lesser skis won't perform, slalom or gs skis will be more performance than you want, especially with the time off you have had.

All this said, I can't recommend any specific ski or binding as there are way too many to choose from. Just find a reputable shop and stick to any major brands and you won't go wrong. The quality of gear is such that you have to be a pro racer or ski a very specific style to notice the subtle differences in skis and bindings. Also, buying from a good shop will get your bindings adjusted properly and trained service techs for future check ups.

Hope this helps.
Keep on skiing,
Windlover
