longer slalom ski for both SL/GS?

2016/7/22 11:04:59

Question
Hi Cynthia,

We have determined that the Elan RCX comes right to chin.  So we are thinking about going with a Fisher WC SL 135 to cover both the SL and GS races in J-5 this season.

Would this work?

Otherwise, I'm thinking the Volkl Racetiger in a 130 SL ski and a 142 GS.

As a reminder he is 55"/70 lbs and this is his first season as a J-5 (he was a strong skier at that J-6)

Thanks,

Dorothy

Answer
Dear Dorothy --

If your son has not grown taller, or gained a lot of weight, I recommend keeping the Elans for the slalom races since he was having success with them.  Then I would buy the Fischer or the Volkl in around the 140 length as his GS ski.  The Fischer will be easier for him to get used to, but the Volkl will demand he become a better GS skier.

If he has grown taller and heaver, and you need one ski to to do both jobs.  The Fischer ski is the best bet, and you are right to stay around 135 for the length.

If you can afford it, the two racetiger variants are tailored to the races they should be used for and will demand he ski them correctly, but reward him for improved technique.  My concern with this approach, is that you want to build on success from last year.  Too many changes at one time may throw his technique and his skiing may regress.  It might be best to buy the GS ski and allow him to use the Elans for slalom, until you see how he does with the transition.  If the transition goes well, but you still think his slalom skiing needs a boost, then you can get the new slalom skis.

Again, please write back if you have additional questions, or want to discuss other options.  Think snow!
