finding the right ski

Question
I have been using the Volkl p40 F1 Platinum (168 cm) ski as both my racing ski and everyday ski for the past few years.  I'm looking to upgrade and want  a ski both for GS and everyday use that has a similar feel.  I've been looking at the atomic line: GS11, GS9, as well as the supercrosses.  I'm worried that the GS 11 will be way too stiff for everyday use, even at 166 cm.  Any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
Dear Sam --

If you still like Volkl skis, you might try the Racetiger GS, in a 164-168 cm length.  You can see a short description at http://www.skimag.com/skimag/buyers_guide/app/product/0,15058,ski1151,00.html

The Fischer ski also skis well at the 164-168 cm length.  http://www.skimag.com/skimag/buyers_guide/app/product/0,15058,ski1146,00.html

Rossignol tends to ski softer at a given length than either of these other two skis.  Personally I find they do not give me enough energy back, and I prefer Volkl.  However, you might consider the X9 World Cup.  They get great reviews from folks that want a race and all around fun ski in one.

The word on the Atomic GS11 is that they ski softer in the shorter lengths, but still hold a great edge for carving.  If you like fast long-turn cruising you will like this ski.

Given that you are a serious skier, and about to invest a lot of money, you should find a shop where you can rent the skis you are interested in, or go to a mountain's demo day.  That way you can take the skis out for some turns, and see if you really like how a ski performs with your skiing style.

Best of luck to you.  Enjoy your search!
