Question
im off to wanaka to work and live( from sydney ) I know a little about the place but want to know more. have you been there or to treble cone or cardrona? what can you tell me about these places.
thanks

Answer
To date i haven't ventured that far south on NZ's south island.

There are many places to find great info.
I'm a Lonely Planet traveller - i get one for pretty much everywhere i'm going. If your going to be there a year - it could be a good investment.

Another place is the Lonely Planet website.

Or google Wanaka, Treble Cone, Cardona and look for the NZ tourist info site, they are also quite good.

If you dont have unlimited web access - go to any of the travel agents and let them know thats the area your wanting to see in detail (dont tell them moving there for a year) and ask for travel brochures.
Even though you've no intention of doing the bus tours, find out where they're going... because they are usually headed for the places of interest.

But i would recommend trying to get onto the Franz Josef Glacier and the 5 day Milford sound. But you'll need to book in advance.

NZ is small in size so you'll be able to get most of it in over the year.

thanks for the question, enjoy your time there - it's a great country to visit (i've been 5 times and i've still so much more to see).

Oh and don't forget to pack your woollies and skis/snowboard..... i think you'll be needing them.
