Diving Teams & Summer Camps NYC

Question
Hi my 12 year old daughter was advancing to level 9 as a gymnast this summer but decided she had enough injuries. She wants to dive. Can you direct me to any clubs or teams in the nyc area. Also summer camps for beginning divers, can be within driving distance to nyc. Thx

Here is how I suggest you go about finding a diving program in NYC for your daughter:

Go to www.usadiving.org, the website for our national governing body. Click on Clubs and then Find A Club. Enter New York and a list of teams will come up. Try New York Dive Club or Long Island Divers. There is another team in NYC that is not listed. It is the Morningside Divers run by the coach from Columbia University, Gordon Spencer. Just Google "Columbia University Athletics' go to their home page, click on Inside Athletics and then Coach Directory. Look for his name and contact info under Women's Swimming and Diving.I feel he is the best coach in NYC.

For a summer camp near you, try the one run by the Army coach, Ron Kontura. You will find his contact info at the USA Diving website under West Point Dive Club. Call or e-mail and ask if he has room in a camp this summer. While at the USA Diving website, also click on Divers and then Camps and Clinics for other choices. This site also has good info for families new to diving so navigate your way around for free info.

You can also find teams by going to www.divemeets.com. Click on Divers, Coaches and Teams. At the next page click on Teams. A huge list of teams from all over the world will come up. The first US list is called AAU Diving. This is another national governing body. Scroll down until you find teams in NY. Click on the team name for more info. Also go to www.aaudiving.org for info on their programs. While at the divemeets.com team list site, scroll down to the USA Diving members and look for NY teams and their info. Also look under NCAA teams for ones in NY that may have beginning diving programs. If you pursue competitive diving, you will be using this website for meets so you may as well join - it is free to register.

Other diving websites are:

www.diving.about.com - Site that explains the sport.Good info in beginning diving.

www.flipnrip.com - Site for diving families.

If you cannot get into the Army camp, feel free to ask a follow up question with your home or office e-mail and I will forward you an e-mail I received that has a large list of diving camps all over the US.

Good luck in your search.
