Shawn Michaels didn't really leave the WWE for good.  He retired from active wrestling due to nagging injuries, his desire to spend more time with his family, and to focus more on his religious interests.  When wrestlers retire from wrestling in WWE, they still remain on contract as consultants (who are paid by the job they do and not so much an hourly wage), there is still merchandising money that is received even after retirement, and some are hired on for behind the scenes work.  

Dean Malenko when he retired from wrestling became a road agent.  A Road Agent basically helps the workers put together good matches and keep them within the timeframe of television.  Pat Patterson continues working in the main office even though he's retired again.  

I really doubt that this is the last we will see of Shawn Michaels in front of the camera.  He may in a year or two (or maybe as soon as a few months) come back in a general manager type of capacity.  It will all depend on what the show writers come up with and the desire Shawn has to be back in front of the Camera.  I'm sure his wife and kids will enjoy his time and be happy that he's home.
