Skateboarding For Beginners - Lessons For Kids

It should be secured and should not slip when the board is moving fast. Elbow and knee pads are equally important because it will protect your kids from having scratches in case they fall off while practicing.

Third, you need to train them first on the grass. The grass is not the smoothest area where you can play skateboarding but it is important for beginners. The grass creates friction and it prevents the board from moving too fast. For kids and beginners, this is very essential for them to have a feel of the movements first. After they have mastered riding the board on the grass, it will be the right time to transfer to the concrete surface.

Fourth, you need to train them how to use their dominant foot while skating. The dominant foot should always be the one to touch the ground to push the board forward. The non-dominant foot should always be on the board. This will ensure that the kids get proper balance. This will also make sure that they can kick forcefully to create movement.

Fifth, if the kids are practicing on concrete, you need to make sure that the surface is flat. You can do this by placing the board on the ground. If it does not move or roll to one side, then the surface is good to go. This is important to prevent any accident.

Sixth, you need to teach them how to balance on the board. Tell them to ride it but do not allow them to move first. Once both their feet are on the board, tell them to bend their knees and just maintain their balance. They need to get used to this in order to be able to move around freely and steadily once they kick the ground.

In choosing a path to learn skateboarding, there are two routes. You may either join a camp, or group lesson, or choose a private instructor. The private instruction is more costly on paper, but it is group lessons that ends up being more risky in the long-run.

Here's How

In group skateboard instruction, you will be part of a group of 5-15 other skateboarders under the supervision of one or two instructors. The majority of this type of instruction will involve verbal teaching and a show from the front of the classroom. After introducing the technique, it is then the skateboarders turn to follow and replicate the skill presented. All fifteen skateboarders then start trying.

Studies have shown lack of supervision in beginner skateboarding is one of the biggest sources of injury. All in all, the attention of these two instructors can not focus on the technique of more than one skater at a time. Lack of attention is the biggest prohibiter in group lessons. Here's the problem, skateboarding is more like a mathematical equation than like biology lab. There are certain exact foot placements, pressure requirements, and agility skills. Sure, you can experiment all you want with the right balance, but at the end of the day, it comes down to a specific solution. There is a lot more experimenting in group lessons which can lead the risk of injury.

Private lessons are not only safer but will take less time.

There's no question that group lessons work.
