When you are considering going skiing in the Alps, you'll have a large range of resorts from which to choose. The first thing you need to decide is which area you want to visit. For example, if you want to visit somewhere like the Three Valleys, one of the best options is Espace Killy, where you will find two excellent resorts: Tignes and Val d'Isere. Here is what you need to know about those resorts in order to plan your trip.

Tignes

Tignes is one of the highest ski resorts in Europe, and it is a popular destination for skiing in the Alps. Due to its height of 2,100 metres, the snow reliability is excellent, although some people feel it lacks the character and village feel of some of the lower resorts. However, if you're coming for the skiing you won't be disappointed and this really is a resort for serious enthusiasts. In fact, you can ski nearly the whole year round here by heading up to the Grand Motte, which has a height of 3,455 metres. Wherever you choose to ski, you'll find the terrain varied and interesting and off-piste areas are well served by lifts.

Accommodation is either close to the pistes or on the pistes, making it convenient for ski-in ski-out. As well as convenient access to the slopes, you will also be able to connect with Val d'Isere, and between them the two resorts have access to 300 km of pistes. The village of Tignes le Lac has a ski school and nursery slopes, so this may be the best option for families or beginners. However, in general Tignes is more suited to intermediate and advanced skiers.

Val d'Isere

This famous resort is a popular destination for intermediate and advanced skiers. Its wooden buildings are charming and you'll also get easy access to Tignes via the shuttle bus.

Runs can be tricky here and they are not ideal for beginners. However, the pistes are well-groomed and there are also some ski schools. It tends to get quite busy and it also has an excellent snow record, with the season lasting into May.

If you are looking for a resort with good nightlife, this is the one to choose over Tignes. The apr鑣-ski is lively and you will find plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants. You can also enjoy plenty of activities including swimming, ice-skating and more. All in all, it's a great option for anyone planning to go skiing in the Alps.

Espace Killy is one of the best areas for skiing in the Alps, and both Tignes and Val d'Isere will provide you with an ideal destination for your ski break.
