Little-Known Tips for Buying a Used Motorhome

Buying a used motorhome is exciting and promises future adventures on the road. Making a smart purchase is easier when a buyer thoroughly inspects the vehicle for any defects and issues that might require fixing soon after purchase.

Everyone knows that checking an RV's major systems, such as the engine, battery, and air conditioner, is an essential project when purchasing a used vehicle, but there are other areas of the motorhome that a buyer might forget about during the inspection process.

Inspect All the Fans

There are several fans around a motorhome, and each of these little devices might fail after several years of use. Fans are located in areas like the living area near the cooking equipment, and there's always a fan in the bathroom. In addition, there might be fans installed along the roof that also warrant a look.

Check the Latches

Every drawer inside the motorhome will have a latch, and after use these latches might end up breaking or becoming loose. Although it might take some time, it's a good idea to open every single latched drawer in the motorhome to make sure everything works.

Don't Forget the Heater

Many motorhome purchases at used RV dealers in Florida are made in the summer or the warmest months when the weather is pleasant or hot, and checking the air conditioner on the motorhome is one of the first activities, but it's important that the heater is also checked. It might be a little uncomfortable, but when the colder months roll around, you'll be happy you made sure the heaters operate.

Inspect the Floor

A simple glance at the floor isn't enough to determine whether it's in good condition. The material covering the floor (perhaps a rug or carpet) could mask problems lurking below. When walking around the motorhome, pay attention to how the floorboards "feel" because movement could signal some rotting under the floor.

Put the RV in Motion

Most of the systems on a motorhome can be checked while the vehicle is stationary, but some things like the brakes cannot be fully measured without driving around. Most used RV dealers in Florida will be happy to let you test drive the motorhome. Pay attention to how the vehicle maneuvers and the brakes.

Consider the Gas Regulator

Most people will take a look at the propane tanks, but it's also a good idea to examine the LP gas regulator, which is located just to the side of the propane tanks. These devices typically only last about 10 years on a motorhome.

Check for Delamination

The walls of a standard motorhome are comprised of several different layers that may separate over time under a process called "delamination." A small problem with delamination might be fixable in most circumstances, but larger problems are often so costly that the repair exceeds the value of the motorhome.

Buying a used motorhome offers a terrific way to travel and see the world as never before, and inspecting the motorhome with a fine-tooth comb offers the best opportunity to get a vehicle that will offer years of enjoyment and use for its owners. Don't be afraid to take as long as necessary to inspect every part of a motorhome to make sure everything is working well.
