Braided Fishing Line Advantages

If you are an avid fisherman, than you are probably well aware of the advantages and disadvantages of using mono-filament fishing line. You may not be aware of the braided fishing line advantages. Lets compare the two below and see if adding a braided fishing line to your repertoire will result in more fish in the live well.

First of all, mono-filament fishing line is made of a single strand of synthetic fiber of a certain diameter, depending on the strength. This single strand is light weight, flies through the air with minimal resistance, and doesn't have a problem sinking in the water. Because it is a single strand of synthetic fiber, it has the ability to flex and stretch. This may be good or bad, depending on the situation, but most fishermen do not like this quality. Also because it is a single strand, it is weak and susceptible to fraying on jagged or sharp objects and breaking under pressure.

Braided fishing line, on the other hand, is made up of a weave or braid of multiple strands of synthetic fiber of equal diameter. It is heavy duty fishing line. Because the fishing line is made up of multiple strands of fiber, it resists fraying and breaking, almost to an annoying point. It has a tendency to etch your guides on your fishing rod, and will ruin a good pair or scissors or nippers, so don't use your teeth to cut it!

On the downside, it casts poorly compared to mono-filament line, due to the extra resistance of the multiple fibers in the air and against the guides. It also floats, which makes it ideal for fly fishing leaders. Most fly fishing leaders on the market are braided for this reason.

The bottom line when it comes to braided fishing line is that it is much stronger than mono filament line. Large fish with sharp teeth are better pursued with a braided fishing line rather than a mono filament because you will have fewer or no break offs during a fight. If you are looking at fishing in an area with sharp rocks that could fray your line, braided line is better than mono filament line here as well.
