Where To Catch The Biggest Fish In California

California is the third-largest state and contains the third-longest coastline in the country. For anglers, that means the Golden State is one big playground filled with some of the best fishing in the world, let alone the country. When factoring both fresh and saltwater species, you're looking at dozens upon dozens of gamefish all just waiting to be caught by those fortunate to drop a line here. But where should you go with all the options available? If you're looking for trophy fish, check out the locations below. You could make a top 50 list and still leave fish out, but as a starting point for the best of the best in California, try out these spots for five of the most popular gamefish in the state.

Thresher Shark - La Jolla Shores

There are a lot of fish available off the coast of San Diego, but if you want real fun, thresher sharks are the way to go. Fortunately, you don't have to be as courageous as the angler in the above video to get your thrills, but if you're up for a challenge, taking a kayak out for these brutes is as good as any. Otherwise, take out your own boat or hire a charter and try and catch some threshers in a little safer vessel. If you're stuck on shore, don't be discouraged as many anglers get their fix pier fishing for sharks. The current state record is off the La Jolla shores, close to Carlsbad - a 575-pounder caught just five years ago.
