Coral is not a type of fish. It is a type of marine invertebrate in the phylum Cnidaria. Corals are colonial organisms made up of tiny, individual animals called polyps. Coral polyps live in colonies and secrete a hard exoskeleton made of calcium carbonate. This exoskeleton forms the coral reef.
