How To Get A Flat Left Wrist At Impact

2016/7/20 10:04:16

One key area to work on if you want to improve your balll striking is learning how to get a flat left wrist at impact. That is if you are a right-handed golfer. I'm talking about the lead wrist in your golf swing. So which one is closer to your target, that is your lead wrist.

Whis is this so important? Because this aspect of impact is critical to hitting ball then turf for not only maximum compression, but distance and accuracy as well.

95% of all amateur golfers (myself included) make contact with the ball with a bent left wrist, which is considered a flipping of the club through impact. This flipping causes many mishits such as the "thinned", "topped", "chunked" and "bladed" golf shot, which all result in a massive loss in distance, accuracy and consistency.

Why do we all do this?

My guess is we have an incorrect view (and feel) of the proper impact position in golf. When you look at the tour players at impact, their hands are ahead of the ball, with a forward leaning shaft, and yes a flat left wrist. This promotes a downward (compressed) blow onto the ball, that will give the ball high, as well as boring through the air, especially if it's windy.

Impact Tip And Drill

Get in your address position, then move your hands (while holding the club) towards the target, and at the same time open up your hips just a tad. Now hold that position, and you are now in the perfect impact position. Does it feel weird? Do you think you get there in your swing. I'll bet not!

So now you can go back and forth from address to impact to start ingraining the proper feel in your brain, and slowly start hitting short shots trying to achieve this impact position.

Important

Do this drill in front of a mirror in your home to make sure you are keeping a steady head position. And, to really see the difference from address to impact.

Freeze impact and look down at your hands, shaft and clubhead and really soak it in how much different that is from where you normally are.

Look at your left wrist. Notice how it is completely flat, resulting in that forward shaft lean of your golf club.

This must be implanted in your brain AND your muscles through the drill mentioned above, as well as hitting short shots first, to achieve this position through impact.

To achieve a better golf swing you've got to get this right, so it's worth the time and effort doing drills, and hitting short shots.

You might also want to use a flat left wrist golf aid to learn this faster. Put it on and hit balls with it to get the proper feel of your left wrist being completely flat through the ball.
