Tseng claims LPGA Championship

2016/7/20 11:06:28

Yani Tseng continued her outstanding season with a blistering performance to win the LPGA Championship by 10 strokes.

Just a week after Rory McIlroy抯 astonishing display to win the men抯 US Open by eight strokes at Congressional, Tseng dominated the second major of the women抯 season in similar fashion to add to her ever-growing trophy haul.

The Chinese Taipei player began the final round five clear of nearest challengers Morgan Pressel and Cindy LaCrosse and produced her second 66 of a superb week to finish 19 under.

Pressel could only muster a 71 to finish second on nine under and, with Lacrosse plummeting down the field after a 77, Norway抯 Suzann Pettersen shot 67 to move into a share of third with Paula Creamer and defending champion Cristie Kerr.

It was all about Tseng, though, and after dropping a shot at the first she responded with three straight birdies to reassert her dominance. Two more followed in a four-under-par front nine and three birdies and one bogey on the way home left her winning margin in double figures.

The win, her second in this tournament having previously won it in 2008, made her the youngest female golfer to win four major tournaments and her 72-hole total equalled the record for an LPGA major.

She said: 揑 was really, really nervous on the first hole. The second hole I felt better. I had three birdies in a row and after that I calmed down.

揑t抯 very special. I don抰 think of breaking any records. Now I抦 thinking about another Grand Slam.?br />
England抯 Karen Stupples shot the best round of the day with a seven-under-par 65 but finished one over, while the shot of the day honours belonged to Australian Sarah Kemp for a hole in one at the par-three fifth hole.
