Many golfers will be familiar with handicaps. Handicaps are a recognised measure of your skill level and many golf courses and clubs require you to have an official certificate before you are allowed to play or join. Whilst the talk of certificates may sound incredibly official and complex getting your golf handicap calculated is incredibly simple to do.

A number of the official organisations allow you to get your handicap calculated by turning in recent scorecards to prove how well you are playing. Depending on the body you may need only a few scorecards whereas some require your best ten from your latest 30 games which whilst it may seem a bit excessive it will give you a more accurate result.

Once you have your handicap and know how well you are playing you can then use that as a measure of how good you are, initially your handicap is going to be pretty woeful but this shouldn’t worry you. It’s to be expected. You will want to improve and become better at game of golf and your handicap will help you quantify how well you are performing and how much you are improving.

Much of the frustration of golf is down to the mistakes we make naturally; little quirks and errors that can make the ball spin off into the bushes. It can make some amateur players simply give up or lose their composure, turning one miss hit shot into a round of nightmare shots being fired recklessly around the course.

It’s important to gauge where you are going wrong and either learn how to fix your shot with golf books or tuition videos or getting help from a professional golf tutor. Your local course will normally offer lessons or shot analysis to identify where you are going wrong and help you iron them out so you begin hitting the shots more cleanly and straighter.

As you improve so too will your handicap which should begin to reduce. This is the perfect way to progress in the sport and some more exclusive golf courses will be open to you as some courses have minimum requirements. So once you have determined your official golf handicap you’ll be able to know what you need to improve and be able to monitor your progress.

Using an online golf handicap calculator can help you get your golf handicap recognised and you’ll be able to take to the fairways, also don’t forget to look after your golf clubs by getting golf insurance.
